Should I file an insurance claim if my car damage is minor?

Good question.  I’m assuming your deductible is $500 - $1,000.  If the car accident was your fault, and the damage is less than or equal to your deductible, then you clearly shouldn’t file the claim.  Personally, I go by the “3x” rule which states that you shouldn’t file a claim unless the damage is three times your deductible.  Different people have different opinions on this, but my thinking is that in the long-term you’ll pay far more in increased insurance costs if you go ahead and file a claim for $1,000 when your deductible is $500, for example.  At the end of the day it’s personal preference.
